This terrific quote (which introduces Chapter 4 in my book), is credited to Jillian Michaels, a popular personal trainer known for her appearances on reality TV shows, to include The Biggest Loser. She helps people change their physical appearance, which clearly requires strong mental focus and supportive relationships.
When repeatedly ‘let down’ by our relationship with a ghost mother, it’s natural to stay focused on the pain & disappointment of this reality – and to wish that it was different. Too often this translates to expecting to be disappointed in other relationships as well, or to being unconsciously attracted to unhealthy relationships in which these patterns are repeated.
Healing and change happen when we shift our focus to the relationships in our life that DO support us. The people who see the beauty inside of us, who love and encourage us ~ these are the relationships that deserve to be cherished.
